Feedback on Kegels for Men

If you do Kegel exercises, please help others by sharing your feedback. What would you tell someone who was considering this exercise? Please remember that we do not give medical advice. That is for your local health care provider, who is familiar with your medical history.

Subj: Sex with self
Date: 1/6/2005
For the last 7-8 years, I have masturbated over 3 times a day. I'm 26 with a beautiful fiancee. Now on average my penis is flaccid when I masturbate. Am I over doing it? I am extremely horny but find myself usually getting an erection from masturbating rather than the thought of sex. What do you recommend so that I get back to full erection and not have to masturbate to get erect. I also notice that I masturbate some times for an hour or two while flaccid. Thanks for your time.
Mike

AskDocWeb: It does sound like you are over doing it. There is a term used to describe what happens to people who work too much. It is called "burn out" and it can happen to anyone who overdoes an activity over time. Your penis may be flaccid during sex because it needs a vacation from masturbating so much. And after your penis vacation, consider giving the job of masturbating your penis to someone else, like your fiancee. You might be surprised with how much fun that is.

Subj: Sperm volume
Date: 2/16/2005
Does the product semenax work to really increase volume of semen? Please advise.
Ayaz

AskDocWeb: Yes it does. Of course this increases the chance of the woman becoming pregnant also. In some cases this is desirable and others it is not.

Subj: Using the kegel muscles
Date: 2/23/2005
I have been doing the Kegel exercises for a while and think my PC muscles are fairly strong. While urinating, I can easily stop whenever I decide to; however, I have to hold it (continue flexing) for a little while (10 seconds) before it dies down completely; otherwise when I release, I begin again. Also, when erect, I can flex and see a noticeable increase in size, as I saw described on your webpage.

During sex/by myself, when I start reaching orgasm and flex those muscles, I can never seem to hold it back; I get overwhelmed and end up ejaculating prematurely anyway. If I stop stimulation altogether just as I am reaching the point of no return, or keep stimulation very minimal, I can do it; breathing deeply and flexing my muscles (for quite a while at times), allows me to extend my erection, and continue stimulation.

How exactly do you use the muscles just before reaching orgasm to delay ejaculation? Why is this not working? Thank you.
Mike

AskDocWeb: It is working and you are making progress. Remember you find the correct muscles during urination but you exercise at other times. You can exercise while driving, waiting in line, almost anytime. You are learning to control your sexual experience and you have learned one of the most important parts. You have learned is to stop stimulation just before the point of no return. In order to do that, you have to be able to recognize the point of no return and you have learned how to do that. Applying this during sex puts you way above average in lovemaking.

The Kegel muscles pump up your volume (size) and move you closer to climax. You build strength in them to give yourself a larger, firmer erection. You build control of these muscles so that you can chose to consciously relax them at the appropriate time. These muscles are part of the group of muscles that contract during climax. If you contract the Kegels after passing the point of no return, you can increase the intensity and duration of the climax but you also speed the event. Try this, after passing the point of no return, do not contract the Kegel muscles until you are ready to climax.

Subj: Prostatitis
Date: 2/23/2005
I'm 26 years old and just recently had prostatitis the doc said I will be prone to getting it again but hopefully not until I'm 50 will kegel exercises possibly keep me from getting this again?
Josh

AskDocWeb: No, but then if you only had this once, it may never return. Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland, usually caused by bacteria. Doing exercises will improve your general health but will not immunize you against any kind of bacteria.

Subj: Erections getting softer
Date: 3/5/2005
I can stop my urine in midflow with ease, but I still find myself having trouble keeping an erection. And when I do Kegels while erect, I can do a few but it will eventually go soft. I never used to have these problems. I could always perform in bed but my erections have been getting softer lately. Could masturbation be a problem, what would you suggest? (I'm 20)
LJ

AskDocWeb: Masturbation is not likely to be the problem but you could have something else going on. You might want to have things checked out by a urologist. Stopping your urine mid-flow is not the end but rather the beginning of the exercises. You use that technique only to find the correct muscles. Once you know what muscles to use, you do the exercises outside of the restroom.

Subj: Stopping the flow of urine
Date: 3/25/2005
When you do the exercises of stopping the flow of urine, do you stop the flow of urine by squeezing you penis? Would this help?
Denny

AskDocWeb: No, the pressure buildup would just stretch the urethra (the tube through which urine flows). That may be useful after certain kinds of surgery but does nothing for your pc muscles. You do not use you hand to stop the flow of urine. You use the muscles behind the base of your penis.

Subj: Orgasm frequency
Date: 3/28/2005
I am 70 and have difficulty achieving orgasm (no problem with erection). I have had peyronnie's disease which has somewhat restricted penis size, girth, and sensitivity (though I'm basically ok). I also been taking phenobarb for years due to adult onset epilepsy. What is the best way for me to improve orgasm frequency and reliability?
David

AskDocWeb: The best way to improve your orgasms would be to first improve your overall general health and then improve your sexual health. That would consist of eating a balanced diet, exercise for general good health, exercise for sexual health, getting an adequate amount of sleep and avoiding the things that sabotage your sex life.

Subj: Exact benefits
Date: 3/31/2005
What are the exact benefits of doing Kegels aside from having more control in bed?
Mann

AskDocWeb: You also have more control out of bed as in, no incontinence later in life. If you ignore your PC muscles, you are likely to use something called "Adult diapers" when you get old.

Subj: I need help
Date: 4/8/2005
I find my pc muscle, however I can never be able to hold the contraction. As soon as I flex the muscle it goes back down. How can I hold the contraction for at least a 1/2 a second?
Francois

AskDocWeb It takes time to build up strength in this muscle. Keep at it and you will gradually develop more strength and control.

Subj: Questions
Date: 4/18/2005
Hi, I've done the pc muscles for a while now but then stopped. I really noticed the difference while doing them. I used to do them twice a day and even do jelqs and other exercises. The benefits were amazing. I used to wake up at night with a really hard erection. I used to wake up in the morning with the same rock hard erection. I read that these exercises were unhealthy and that other methods like anal breathing work better during sex. Is that true? How do I use the pc muscles during sex. Do I control my breathing while tensing the muscles. Relax my body and focus on my anus? Do I take deep breaths and relax the pc muscles? Sorry for writing the bible.
Iep

AskDocWeb Anal breathing is a new one. (Grin) Most people try to avoid doing that in the presents of others.

There is a danger of injury with overdoing jelqs. If you do them, make sure you warm up first.

Subj: Strange feeling
Date: 5/25/2005
When I tighten the Kegel muscles very strong while my penis is (at least partially) erected, I experience a very strange feeling all over my member. It's not pleasurable or painful, but a bit scary. It feels as if blood was flowing faster or something. Is this normal?
Rob

AskDocWeb: Yes, it is normal for this to happen. That strange feeling is likely to be caused by the increase in the blood pressure in your penis.

When you experience something unfamiliar, you have two basic choices; fear and excitement. If you anticipate something pleasurable happening as a result of that unfamiliar feeling, you feel excited. On the other hand if you imagine something damaging happening, you feel fear or dread. Our advice is to learn more about what is happening and the consequences so that you can enjoy it instead of worry about it.

Subj: About Jelqing
Date: 6/4/2005
I have injured myself jelqing after doing them for about a year. They really do help gain size, firmness and stamina. I LOVED it, so did my girlfriend. Unfortunately, I became over-zealous and started doing them with a full erection and it was about a month after that that the injury took place. About 2 days after a vigorous session, I noticed my penis was NUMB & COLD! It turns out I put way too much pressure on the nerve and blood vessels that run along the top of the penis. Long story short....it is now a year later and the numbness is gone, the cold is almost gone and I had to rest my penis without sex for the year. I probably have another 6 months to go before it is normal again.

Jelqing would have been ok if I just did them with a 1/2 erection and not too forcefully. I have also read about a few others who did the same thing jelquing and they are miserable now. Be careful with your penis. On the other hand I tried kegels for a few months before Jelqing and I did notice that I was harder during sex so will now try kegels again to see if they can speed up the healing in my penis.
Newven

Kegel exercises are part of a whole set of exercises for your penis.

Subj: Unable to maintain erection
Date: 6/22/2005
I have been enjoying good sex with my wife from past 3 months and now from past few weeks I'm unable to maintain erection. As I enter her I lose the erection and am unable to have intercourse. I'm afraid this may affect our sex life. Please guide.
Joe

Askdocweb: This happens to most men at some point in their life. Usually it is temporary and nothing to be concerned about. Possible causes include stress, fatigue, an emotional problem or problems, and worry. If it lasts more than a few days, you should get checked out by your doctor.

Subj: Lasting longer in bed
Date: 6/23/2005
How long does it take to see results in being able to last longer in bed, I have been doing the exercise for some while and I haven't seen any improvement? Is there anything else I can do?
Steve

Askdocweb: For a quick fix, you might try something like Vivaxa. In the long run, you are better off learning to pace yourself by control of your muscles.

Subj: Erection problem
Date: 6/29/2005
Hi, Thanks for the information. After I started doing kegels, I am experiencing good orgasm. But when I start the sex act, full erection is not coming immediately. Please advise. Thanks,
Krishnayya

Askdocweb: It is not always desirable to get a full erection right away. If or when you don't have a full erection, you can use that time to give more pleasure to your partner. You could also try using the Kegels to "pump up" your erection.

Subj: Having problems with Kegels
Date: 7/13/2005
Even when stopping mid-urination, I cannot identify what is flexing. It just feels like my whole lower region struggling. So from this, I don't even know how to do a Kegel. What I'm trying feels like my buttocks closing together, that's it. And I can still move an erection while I'm holding what mustn't be a flex. How on earth do I do this?
Tommy

Askdocweb: If you can move your erection then maybe trying a different approach would better for you. Place a warm, wet wash cloth over your erect penis and find out how long can you keep the end of your penis raised. Doing that uses the muscles that you want to develop. Call them penis pull-ups. Start out with just a few and do a few more each day. Keep track of your progress and let us know how it goes.

Subj: Kegel devices for men?
Date: 7/23/2005
Are there Kegel devices for men to use like there are for women?
Brent

Askdocweb: You could make your own but there is nothing on the market. Just drape a wet wash cloth over the end of your erect penis and do pull ups as described above. That will achieve the same affect.
